L'éclairage peut être divisé en plusieurs catégories - mais les types les plus courants sont l'éclairage ambiant, l'éclairage de tâche, l'éclairage d'accentuation et l'éclairage d'ambiance. Chaque catégorie d'éclairage a son objectif - par exemple, l'éclairage de travail fournit de la lumière pour l'exécution de certaines tâches telles que les études, le travail, la cuisine ou un certain nombre d'autres activités, tandis que l'éclairage ambiant (également appelé éclairage général) est utilisé pour éclairer uniformément un espace.
